windsor sq. historic addition and renovation
windsor square historic district, phoenix, az | 2,500 sq. ft. | completed 2025
This distinctive home was designed and built in 1947, presumably by John M. Ramson, who constructed the residence to the south and lived there with his wife Eleanor and his mother, Ida. Ida Ramson owned the adjacent parcel at 5005 N 6th Street, then a vacant lot. It is believed the home was conceived as a high-style speculative project and sold in 1948 following completion.
The design largely aligns with the International Style, a prominent modernist architectural movement of the mid-20th century, while incorporating select influences from the Art Deco tradition. Simple geometric forms, including the semicircular front wall and a thin, linear roofline, reflect modernist principles of clarity, proportion, and restraint. At the same time, the home does not adhere strictly to a single stylistic canon. A subtle ornamental motif, more commonly associated with Art Deco, can be seen at the front entry and in the wood detailing atop the columns and beneath the roof overhangs.
Between 2024 and 2025, the home underwent a comprehensive remodel and addition, adding 528 square feet beneath the existing rear patio roof. Thoughtfully designed by local boutique architecture studio, Hype Studio, the renovation carefully preserved the home’s historic façade while thoughtfully updating the interior to support contemporary living. The interior was reconfigured to include an additional bedroom and bathroom, a generous open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area, and a new luxurious primary suite, all featuring a timeless selection of curated materials and finishes.
Hype Studio’s concept builds upon a defining element of the original design: the relationship between interior space and the surrounding landscape. New full-height expanses of glass, on both sides of the main living space and within the primary suite, blur the boundary between indoors and out. Sliding glass doors further strengthen this connection, allowing the backyard—featuring a newly restored swimming pool—to seamlessly integrate into the home’s living environment, creating a relaxed, Palm Springs–inspired resort atmosphere that feels both timeless and luxurious.
